Ross Martin is a genre-crossing guitarist whose career has taken him from concert halls and festival stages to honky-tonks and living rooms across the globe. A graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, Ross draws from a deep well of influences spanning bluegrass, jazz, country, folk, and classical music.
As Bluegrass Unlimited put it, "Like Tony Rice and David Grisman before him, guitarist Ross Martin fords across genres, treading the borders of jazz and bluegrass." He has toured and performed with a wide range of artists including Matt Flinner, Tony Furtado, Grant Gordy, Jacob Jolliff, Ron Miles, and Mollie O'Brien. Since 2019 he has performed with the Jacob Jolliff Band, and he has long been the guitarist in the Matt Flinner Trio—one of the foremost keepers of the new acoustic music tradition launched by David Grisman in the mid-1970s.
Ross has two albums under his own name—Volley and Sylvan Tunnel—featuring original compositions with contributions from Darol Anger, Matt Flinner, Ron Miles, Dominic Lalli, Greg Garrison, and others. He and guitarist Grant Gordy (David Grisman Quintet, Mr. Sun) released their duo album Year of the Dog in 2016.
Music education is central to Ross's professional life. He maintains a private guitar studio and is a sought-after instructor at workshops and music camps including Rockygrass Academy, Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamp, Sorefingers Summer School (UK), Montana Fiddle Camp, and Great Lakes Music Camp, and regularly teaches master classes at educational institutions across the United States.
